This Thursday January 21st Portlandia returns at 10P ET/PT on IFC. Season 6 Episode 1, features GuildWorks ~ Architecture of the Air via Pickathon. Hello Big Sky MONTANA!!!In 2014, we were invited for the first time to install fabric in Billings Montana for the grassroots music festival, Magic City Blues, now in it's 13th year. Our work was so well received last year, that the event organizer decided immediately to bring us back in 2015. As we negotiated a new design For MCB 2015, it became obvious to add us to the Last Best Country Fest 2015, which was to be held on the same field as MCB, just two weeks earlier. Two birds one stone. Two fields - one design. Below are photos from the Last Best Country Festival the first of two installations that will occur this year in Billings Montana. The first event on the agenda, The Last Best Country Fest, was held July 10-11 2015 attached are some quick iPhone photos we snapped during the installation and event. This relatively small installation shows the diversity of our work to fit events of any genre, any size, and any where in the world. If you are up in Wyoming or Montana, perhaps you'd like to come visit us and listen to some great Blues music. Look back to our site in a couple weeks to see how this dual purpose installation will evolve. Here is the aerial view of the installation as seen through Google Earth from Space.
Pickathon 2015, is about to begin which means... Our largest installation of the year, the world's largest annually installed tension structure of its kind, is about to begin. The grand adventure of building the artistic shade fabric arrays at Pickathon started in 2005. It has definitely seen quite a few changes. Holding true to the intention of bringing musicians and fans together, the homegrown humble beginnings have evolved into an epic production. We find it's good to reflect on the past, while looking into the future. Let us share our Pickathon history with you. 2005 Our first installation for PICKATHON was in 2005. If you time travel to Pickathon in 2014, it's fair to say we have learned a lot through the years. 2006 The form of the iconic PICKATHON main stage started to take shape... what was to happen in the years to come is a design evolution. 2007 The stage and crowds began to grow. The event was changing into something big. It was also clear the attendees of Pickathon loved and wanted more shade and we were glad to provide! 2008 The provision of elegant shade improved the experience of attendees. It allowed them to stay longer to enjoy the event without overheating, thus increasing attendance and participation. The evidence is clear as you move forward with us in time. 2009 As we grew the main stage canopy, reaching towards the tree line, we also began enhancing the backstage areas for artists and staff. The overall production was growing, this images truly shows a hint of things to come. 2010 Larger panels were added above the crowd and over the stage, allowing for two large stages side by side. By adding a larger second main stage, the artist lineup was able to double. Comparing the overview images from 2009 (left) to 2010 (right) you will see how we increased the size of multiple panels above the audience, extended coverage for artists on stage and added more shade backstage accounting for more artists due to the increased lineup. 2011 In 2006 a wheel was set in motion which has carried forward. Here you will notice the overall geometry in the sky started to become bolder and more precise, while simultaneously remain organically fluid. 2012 The main array continued to grow, with improved rain coverage for both main stages, as well as increased shade for the audience. Pictured Left, GuildWorks added the Metatron, a colorful multi-layered array to provide much needed shade within the vendor/food area. This same piece was also used at Sacred Spaces Village at Burningman 2014. With the attendance building, it was clear new areas would have to emerge to provide engaging spaces. Here we see the playful kids area during the day, as night falls... lights transform this space into a cool bar area thus providing more entertainment to the ever-growing crowd of excited music fans that come to Pickathon year after year. 2013 We created a design evolution to the canopy above the audience at the main stage. This dramatic shift came about as a way of improving the installation process, improving long term sustainability and offering the growth that we helped establish. 2014 While we did not see major changes in the fabric infrastructure at the main stage between 2013 and 2014, we presented multiple shade structure improvements all around the property to improve the experience of the audience, the artists, and the staff. 2015 This year we are increasing the coverage of the main array to extend out to the vendor area. We are also exploring other variables and improvements throughout the property. We hope you have your tickets because it's already sold out. We highly encourage you to get tickets early, this spectacular event sells out quickly every year. If you love our work, if you love working hard, if you love being outdoors, and you love music and want to attend... sign up to volunteer and request to be a part of Sky Crew. We select a few to join us on the field and in the sky to bring this sea of fabric to life. Special thanks to: Pendarvis Farm, the entire Pickathon staff, loyal patrons, new attendees, sponsors, vendors, volunteers, and of course everyone at GuildWorks that has dedicated so much energy to bringing a humble vision in 2005 to what will undoubtedly be another magnificent presentation in 2015. It's amazing what can be accomplished in 10 years. Below you will find a few beautiful night photos taken the Saturday night before the embedding Tornado. The first to hit Ontario this year. Thanks in part to our structural engineering our structures remained unscathed and ready for Sunday's festivities. These multi-dimensional structures are intended to provide shade during the day and create iconic meetup points for festival gathers to chill out, and relax between stages. When working with GuildWorks, we offer customization for endless combinations of brilliant colors and thematic form to meet your specific environmental event needs. Bud Light Digital Dreams is the largest electronic music festival in Canada. Set on the shoreline of Toronto with one of North America’s most iconic skylines in the background, Digital Dreams Music Festival and the Flats at Ontario Place offer party goers a sophisticated festival experience, unlike any other in the Canadian music landscape.
Lightning in a Bottle 2015 Music and Arts Festival GuildWorks is proud to share with you, a couple photos of one of two environments (The Mystery School and Pineal Playground), that we created for this edition of LIB. Both environments were dedicated to presentations, skill-sharing, and speaking to your passion projects. Our installation went very well and were happily received by this years participants. We're looking forward to another go, next season for LIB 2016! For more information about Lighting in a Bottle: http://lightninginabottle.org
GuildWorks was commissioned to build the infrastructure of Red Lightning. A community that was born out of a desire to bring balance and healing between the masculine and feminine on Earth as a first step towards a cosmic consciousness. A community of extraordinary people committed to bringing magic, healing and a deep inquiry into the soul. They provide a loving safe container that allows for boundless freedom and expansion of self! We are proud to present the community space we created for them at Burning Man 2014. Here is the first image of our first installation in Illinois. We sent a crew of 12 to build while camping on site for two weeks. Phases of the Moon ~ Music & Art Festival, is being held Sept 11-14, 2014 and once built will represent one of our largest installations. The plan is to feature two enormous multilayer presidium style stages that are each 300 ft across and side by side to each other. Each stage will include two 80' projection screens. We will also be presenting a beautiful sanctuary space featuring multiple healing zones, and chill areas. There is also a smaller stage featuring a custom aerial rig. As always there will be a few surprises. We are anxious to share photos with you. Our on site staff is busy building so we will update you as we are sent new photo updates.
GuildWorks is proud to work with Tim Goodridge, to bring our Architecture of the Air for the first time in Billings Montana for the 2014 Magic City Blues Festival in Southpark. There was quite a buzz about our work being that this is the first time we've presented an installation in all of Montana.
We wanted to personally thank the Billings Parks and Recreation Department for their gracious support, and for providing bucket trucks, arborists and consultation as to some of the highest anchor points in trees. Check out this news reel by Aug 8, 2014 7:49 PM by Aja Goare - Q2 News Magic City Blues Festival tunes up two fest locations BILLINGS - The Magic City wrapped up hours of preparation for this weekend's big blues festival, which is taking place at two different venues. But the big stages and accommodations don't set up themselves. "It's a long effort to put this festival together," said Magic City Blues Festival Site Coordinator Sheena Rice. "We had to bring in the stage, set the stage. We do it all on the day of. We can't even shut the street down until 9 a.m." From 9 a.m. onward, nearly 100 pairs of hands set up a beer tent, food vendors stations, tables and chairs. And Montana Avenue's asphalt becomes a dance floor, but only for one night. "We will have a crew that will take down the stage tonight and then there's a crew of volunteers coming in tomorrow morning and we'll get the rest of it torn down and have the street reopened at noon," said Rice. But just because vehicles take back the streets tomorrow, doesn't mean the Magic City is ready to put away its dancing shoes. "We're moving the whole festival to South Park Saturday and Sunday," she said. "We're going have the shade put up, food and beer vendors and it's gonna be a cool party down at South Park." South Park looks a little different than normal. This year two of the three days will be solely at the park which is a stark contrast to its downtown counterpart. "It's not going to be nearly as packed because there's a lot more space here and that's one of the primary reasons that we've come down to South Park," said Magic City Blues Festival Promoter Tim Goodridge. "Now everyone can have a place to sit - all they've gotta do is bring their lawn chair with them. We're on the grass instead of the asphalt." But both grass and asphalt can be expected for future Magic City Blues Festivals. "We're committed to both locations because we love the dynamic of downtown and then when you come here you get a different show, so it brings variety to it. So somebody will be downtown and it's energy, loud music, fun cranking and then you come here and the sound is much more pristine because you don't have the buildings - you don't get the echoes," said Goodridge. "So it's a different scene and we like the change from one to the other - so we're committed to the change moving forward." A full schedule for each day of the festival can be found at www.MagicCityBlues.com. Be sure to follow this link to watch Aja's video commentary and interview with Tim Goodridge, our host. http://www.ktvq.com/news/magic-city-blues-festival-tunes-up-two-fest-locations/ This weekend Toronto is hosting the third iteration of the country's largest Electronic Dance Music festival. Produced by Electronic Nation Canada, with approximately 80,000 attendees, Bud Light Digital Dreams music festival is touted as the largest and most popular electronic music festival in Canadian history.
Guildworks is proud to have designed and installed one of the four stages here at Digital dreams described by the Toronto Sun as the "festivals hidden gem." The DJ only "Fantasyland" Stage utilizes our new stretch rain fabric and backs up right against Lake Ontario giving viewers glimpses of sail boats and the natural beauty of the lake. Our custom fabric environment comes alive with the wind during the day and the lights at night. Aside from the boom room tent, it is the only stage with any shade available. Located on a manmade Island known as Ontario Place, the other three installations we built were more artistic but also involve some amount of shade and refuge. In addition to the Fantasyland Stage, we designed fabric pieces for the main two walkways between the larger stages and a Rainbow Vortex Temple at the Gold Pit chill out area complete with golden lawn chairs for people to relax in. It's been a pleasure to work with this production team again, thanks to Larry and Ryan and the rest of the crew for working with us. Designed by Mar Rickets, and Sebastian Collet. Installed by Mar, Sebastian, Trevor, Mike, Reuben and Thea, despite any and all adverse weather we encountered... -by Sebastian Collet |
